Week of August 3

There were not a lot of articles about gender neutrality this week. Several articles discussed using more gender-neutral language. One article mentioned how gender-neutral language is important in order to avoid perpetuating gender stereotypes. Another article discussed making a habit out of using gender-neutral language and phrases in the workplace, such as “Hey team” instead of “Hey guys”. Australia’s Digital Transformation Agency recently updated its manual to include gender-neutral language. Berkeley’s ballot will include voting to change the city’s charter from gendered language to gender-neutral language. Pittsburgh’s new union agreement also states that they will change gendered pronouns to gender neutral ones

Gender-neutral skin care was a featured topic this week. Rihanna’s new gender-neutral skin care line made 100 million dollars in the first few weeks of it’s debut. One article featured several gender-neutral beauty products. Another article about gender-neutral skin care products discussed how gender-neutrality helps skin care seem more appealing to men. The article mentioned that some brands, “tend to stick with the gender-neutral approach when targeting men.” 

Gender-neutral fashion was another topic discussed this week. Vogue recently highlighted three gender-neutral fashion labels stating that, “In recent times, gender neutrality in fashion has gone from subversive experimentation to a movement gaining momentum.” Another article featured several gender-neutral clothing brands and their favorite items from them. One article highlighted second-hand store “Salvage Shoppe” for its gender-neutral clothing options. Several articles discussed Chipotle’s new gender-neutral clothing line with size inclusivity and unisex sizing.  Gender-neutral nurseries were also mentioned this week. One article discussed how to make a gender-neutral nursery, such as picking a theme and avoiding pink and blue since those colors are highly associated with gender. Articles about celebrities and their gender-neutral nurseries were highly discussed. Several articles highlighted Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s new gender-neutral nursery for their son.
