Gender-Neutral Policies

Gender-neutral policies were highly discussed this week. A bill in California has been introduced that would require all retail departments to be gender neutral. According to the ACLU, Joe Biden is currently in communication with LGBTQ+ advocates about creating a third gender-neutral “X” option on IDs and passports. One of the ACLU members who is leading this charge commented, “We want to make sure that there’s a consistent, streamlined and practical modernization in gender markers.”

A White House spokesperson also stated that President Biden is committed to “advancing state and federal efforts that allow transgender and nonbinary Americans to update their identification documents to accurately reflect their gender identity.” Multiple articles also discussed France’s new proposal to ban all gender-neutral language in official administrative documents. Meanwhile, high schoolers in the Portage School District convinced the School Board to change all pronouns in district policies to be gender neutral.
