Gender-Neutral Parenting Styles
Different gender-neutral parenting styles were a big topic of discussion from parenting choices to room designs. Multiple articles discussed model and actress Emily Ratajkowski’s recent pregnancy announcement and her hopes to raise her child in a gender-neutral environment. Ratajkowski commented, “We like to respond that we won’t know the gender until our child is 18 and that they’ll let us know then. Everyone laughs at this. There is a truth to our line, though, one that hints at possibilities that are much more complex than whatever genitalia our child might be born with: the truth that we ultimately have no idea who — rather than what — is growing inside my belly.” She continued stating, “I like the idea of forcing as few gender stereotypes on my child as possible. But no matter how progressive I may hope to be, I understand the desire to know the gender of our fetus; it feels like the first real opportunity to glimpse who they might be.”
Another article discussed the importance of gender-neutral parenting in order to avoid passing down gender stereotypes. It also discussed the positives of gender-neutral parenting, such as strengthening a child’s self-esteem and having more agency with their decision making.
One article highlighted actress Asin Thottumkal’s daughter’s gender-neutral name and meaning. The actress stated, “Her name – both first name and surname, (is) a combination of Rahul and my first names. ‘Rayn’ is pronounced ‘Ra’-‘in’ but spelt with a twist. A short, simple name, gender-neutral, secular, free of religion, caste and patriarchy.” Meanwhile Stephanie Oppenheim, a children’s toy expert that reviews products, stated that they had seen an increase in gender-neutral toy options. For example, Kmart has recently made their toy section and packaging gender neutral. Another article highlighted a gender-neutral children’s store that was praised for its sustainability.
Additionally, an article about designing rooms for children featured a gender-neutral nursery.
