Gender-Neutral Language
Gender-neutral language is being embraced in both schools and businesses. Atrisco Heritage Academy High School is adopting a gender-neutral model for their prom and homecoming royalty. Instead of homecoming/prom king and queen, there will be homecoming/prom royalty. The school’s vice president stated, “The top 20 individuals selected by the senior class, regardless of the gender, will compose our Homecoming court.” The sergeant at arms also commented, “We believe this change will reflect and celebrate the diversity that is present within our student body and community.”
Meanwhile, JP Morgan Chase has replaced it’s gender specific language with gender-neutral language in its bylaws in order to promote diversity and inclusion. LinkedIn is adding a gender-neutral pronoun section to their site in five countries. Before the options she/her and he/him were only available, but now they/them will be added as an option. Additionally, the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners held a conference in which one of the presentations discussed using gender-neutral language during medical practices in order to be more inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals.
