Gender-Neutral Fashion and Designers
Gender-neutral fashion and designers were highly discussed this week. Vogue India released several articles of clothing one could use to establish a gender-neutral wardrobe. Another article from India mentioned the rise of gender-neutral fashion across the globe. One article highlighted an interview with designer Norma Kamali, who is known to have created some gender-neutral ensembles. Another article interviewed designer Harris Reed who is known for their gender neutrality, styling icons such as Harry Styles and Rihanna. When asked about the rising trend of gender-neutral brands they responded with, “I think for me and my friends, it’s so obvious when a brand’s literally just slapping something on, because I feel like there’s no paper trail, or no actual proper representation of what that word fluidity means. A lot of times it’s very transparent—and I’m not going to call companies out—when people slap on a bit of a ‘fluid’ or a ‘unisex’ thing, and they don’t actually choose to collaborate with a person who represents that community or choose the right representation within the models and casting to reflect that.”
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, London Fashion Week has occurred virtually this year and is gender neutral with both women and men’s collections showcased simultaneously. One article discussed how the rise in streetwear for Gen-Z is also causing a rise in gender-neutral fashion. Meanwhile, another article highlighted Fila’s new gender-neutral sneakers. Beyoncé’s newest gender neutral Ivy Park x Adidas collection has dropped and is almost sold out. More celebrities are hopping onto gender-neutral products with Priyanka Chopra releasing a new gender-neutral hair care line.
